As concern for financial security has grown, individuals have increasingly turned to trained financial planners to help them make informed decisions in the face of an overwhelming—and at times confusing—wealth of financial information.

The Financial Planning Program at Boston University's Center for Professional Education is one of the nation's most established and successful programs. For more thirty years, the Financial Planning Program has introduced a variety of financial strategies and products, while providing a strong foundation in financial planning. The flexibility of the program and the industry expertise of our faculty ensure that you gain knowledge in all relevant areas of interest. Graduates receive a Boston University certificate in Financial Planning, and are well prepared to excel on the examination leading to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER certification.

Available online, the Financial Planning Program consists of the following seven courses:

  • Introduction to Financial Planning
  • Financial Planning Risk Management
  • Financial Planning Investments
  • Tax Planning
  • Retirement Planning & Employee Benefits
  • Estate Planning
  • Capstone Course in Financial Planning

Effective May 20, 2020, for the foreseeable future, the classroom Financial Planning program has been paused.  Historic information, including course descriptions, is available here.

Requirements

While we do not have any prerequisites, we do recommend that students have a bachelor's degree, since it is required to sit for the CFP® Exam.

Robert J. Glovsky Scholarship Fund

In 2010, Boston's University's Metropolitan College established The Robert J. Glovsky Scholarship Fund in recognition of Glovsky's dedication to the Financial Planning field and his affiliation with the program at Boston University as its first program director.

The income from this permanently endowed fund now supports annual scholarships to students of financial planning at Metropolitan College's Center for Professional Education. The Fund grants up to $2,000 per year.

Application for the Scholarship opens in June for students currently enrolled at the Center for Professional Education with preference for students who have experience with underserved communities.

Applications for 2024 are due by September 30, 2024 - application link will post in June.  

Boston University does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, Certified Financial Planner andCFP<sup>®</sup>marks. CFP® certification is granted solely by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. to individuals who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met ethics, experience and examination requirements.
