Through the prism of modern international and civil conflicts, this four-part seminar series explores the idea of war and its complicated relationship to societal morality and law. These talks examine the origins and evolution of just war theory and emerging perspectives on war crimes, the rules of engagement, the treatment of prisoners and civilians, and the punishment of perpetrators. From the Great War to the War on Terrorism, a particular focus will be on how the meaning of civilized society increasingly came to be at odds with an ever-expanding capacity for mass destruction.

Presented by Michael Holm, a historian and senior lecturer in Boston University's College of General Studies.

Presented by Ambassador Vesko Garcevic, Professor of the Practice of International Relations, Pardee School of Global Studies.

The seminar has the aim to broaden participants’ understanding of how deep culture affects them and the way they see the world and communicate with others. In the first half of the program, participants will explore different cultural traditions and describe how they are transformed into specific deep cultures that affect perception, values, thought patterns, and styles of expression of cultural groups (nations; peoples) as well as individuals. The seminar will particularly address cultural identities, language and how consensual prejudice and stereotypes are created.

At the end of the seminar, participants will examine the ways globalization changes (and to what extent) our cultural identities and feeling of belonging. The program will briefly address the issue of multiple cultural identities in the contemporary world.

The seminar is devised as a platform for discussion. Participants are expected to actively participate in each session.
